Early Tests Pin Toyota Accidents on Drivers
The U.S. Department of Transportation has analyzed dozens of data recorders from Toyota vehicles involved in accidents blamed on sudden acceleration and found that the throttles were wide open and the brakes weren't engaged at the time of the crash. According to the Wall Street Journal, the early results suggest that some drivers who said their Toyotas and Lexuses surged out of control were mistakenly flooring the accelerator when they intended to jam on the brakes. The findings by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) involve a sample of the reports in which a driver of a Toyota vehicle said the brakes were depressed but failed to stop the car from accelerating and ultimately crashing. The findings appear to support Toyota's position that sudden-acceleration reports involving its vehicles weren't caused by electronic glitches in computer-controlled throttle systems, as some safety advocates and plaintiffs' attorneys have alleged. The data recorders analyzed by NHTSA were selected by the agency, not Toyota, based on complaints the drivers had filed with the government. Toyota hasn't been involved in interpreting the data. Toyota to Revive Stalled Mississippi Plant, Build Corollas Toyota will resume construction on its mothballed plant in Mississippi and begin producing the Corolla there late next year. “We first needed to fully utilize our existing facilities as the economy slowed,” Yoshimi Inaba, president of Toyota Motor North America, said in a statement. “Now it's time to fulfill Toyota's promise in Mississippi.” According to Automotive News the automaker said it will soon hire 2,000 workers. Click below to read Toyota’s news release on its plans for the plant. Toyota broke ground on the 2 million-square-foot factory near Tupelo in April 2007 with an initial plan to assemble Highlander SUVs in late 2009. In mid-2008, Toyota said it would build the Prius hybrid instead after fuel prices soared and sales of large vehicles sagged. By December 2008, with the U.S. industry on the brink of its worst sales slump in nearly 30 years, Toyota suspended construction with the building's shell basically complete. When the Mississippi plant opens, almost all Corollas for North America will be produced on the continent. About 40,000 will continue to be shipped from Japan. 2011 Toyota Sienna and Avalon
Earn Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety
'Top Safety Pick Award'

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has announced that the all-new Toyota Sienna van and redesigned 2011 Avalon full-size sedan have each earned “Top Safety Pick” awards.

The “Top Safety Pick” is the highest safety designation awarded by the IIHS.  To qualify for the award, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of “good” in the IIHS’ front, side, rollover, and rear impact tests and be equipped with electronic stability control.  The IIHS testing was made more stringent in 2010 with the addition of the rollover test.

The new Sienna is the first, and currently the only minivan to earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick since the rollover test was added to the criteria.

To earn a “good” rollover rating, a roof must be able to support the equivalent of four times the vehicle’s weight compared with the current federal standard of 1.5.  In the IIHS testing, the Sienna roof withstood a force equal to 4.12 times its vehicle weight.  The Avalon’s weight withstood 4.07 times its vehicle weight.

The IIHS is an independent non-profit research and communications organization funded by auto insurance companies.

All Toyota models meet or exceed the safety requirements of the federal government and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Value Ratings withstand Impact from Recalls!

IntelliChoice.com Announces Best Overall Values of the Year (BOVYs)
For 2010
Cars, Trucks, Crossovers and SUVs!

CHICAGO AUTO SHOW, Chicago, IL, February 10, 2010 - IntelliChoice.com, the leading source for automotive ownership cost and value analysis, today announced the winners of its annual "Best Overall Value of the Year" awards for 2010 cars, trucks, crossovers and SUVs. The annual BOVY Awards identify best-in-class vehicles that deliver outstanding value and lower than expected costs over time.

"IntelliChoice.com's annual Best Overall Value of the Year awards are designed to instruct buyers on the cars, trucks and SUVs that deliver the most value for the money over a five year period of ownership," said Charlie Vogelheim, executive editor of IntelliChoice.com. "We rank every model on the market based on the most important cost of ownership factors, including retained value, fuel, maintenance and repair, insurance, licensing and fees."

2010 Overall Winners

For 2010, IntelliChoice.com identified winners in 31 vehicle classes, with nine overall category winners:

  • Best Car Value Under $24,000 - Toyota Prius
  • Best Crossover/SUV Value Under $28,000 - Toyota FJ Cruiser
  • Best Crossover/SUV Value Over $28,000 - Lexus RX
  • Best Truck Value Under $28,000 - Toyota Tacoma
  • Best Van Value Under $26,000 - Toyota Sienna

The Big Stories for 2010

Recalls hurt Toyota image, but not Toyota value. Toyota and Lexus badges took five of the eight overall rankings for cars and trucks, and 11 of 31 total vehicle segments, once again giving Toyota the highest number of winners. "In light of the current recalls we reevaluated the data factoring in a potential drop in desirability, and 16 Toyota vehicles were still value leaders in their class," said Vogelheim. "Specifically, we analyzed the long term impact on resale values and ownership costs of vehicles that had been subject to well publicized recalls in the past. And what we found is that while the vehicles take a short-term hit, over a typical ownership period the changes are barely measurable, and fall within the range of fluctuations one typically sees in retained value over time. Also, given Toyota's history of strong long-term resale values, we expect these cars will continue to recapture competitive to above average retained value at resale time. Toyota has built up a significant level of goodwill among the consumer over the past 20 years. Given that Toyota and Lexus vehicles excel in every facet of cost ownership, they managed to lead the pack again this year, despite the issues created by the recalls."

The BOVY's: Value over Price

Now in its 23rd year, IntelliChoice.com's "Best Overall Value of the Year" awards recognize vehicles whose cost of ownership is significantly lower than expected compared to competitive models in the same class. The awards provide a quick reference to finding vehicles that promise the best value.

"One of the biggest things IntelliChoice.com emphasizes is that choosing a car wisely is not just about the lowest sticker price or even the lowest ownership costs," said Vogelheim. "The BOVYs recognize cars and trucks whose total cost of ownership is significantly lower than expected compared to its peers. Most of us would assume that a vehicle's price would largely determine its cost of ownership. But that's not the case, and it's the reason the Best Overall Values of the Year awards are so important"

How IntelliChoice.com Determines "Best Overall Value"

For the Best Overall Value of the Year (BOVY) awards, IntelliChoice.com analyzes nearly 1800 models to identify the vehicles that promise the best value within their respective classes. IntelliChoice.com aggregates and analyzes data from auto manufacturers, the U.S. government, and third-party data resources to determine the actual costs of ownership of new vehicles over a five-year period, and assigns a value rating to all mainstream vehicles sold in America each year. This insightful value rating factors the accumulated ownership costs of depreciation, maintenance, repairs, fuel, fees, financing, and insurance to identify the true standout models in each class.
